Whatever Happened To "The Good Old Days"

  • Sep. 9th, 2007 at 9:17 PM

Question ~ Whatever happened to "the good old days"? We we were younger, the days just seemed to be full of fun. Now that I am married and a parent I always feel like we are saying, "Hurry, go faster, we are running late, we've gotta go, etc." You know those phrases, I know that I am not the only one who says them. It seems like, especially during the school year, that we are constantly going. We spend so much time in the car going back and forth from here to there. I can't imagine what it will be like when toddler boy is older and we get to add sports or music lessons or fill-in-the-blank activity to our already big list of church, errands, church, preschool, play-dates, and so forth.

I say all of that to say that I am so glad Ben's parents are coming down the first of October. We will get to take some much needed time away from the hustle of life to enjoy this fun and relaxing time with family and friends. We are looking forward to going to Stone Mountain, the Georgia Aquarium, Underground, and the Coke factory. I am really looking forward to spending this week with my in-laws, they are such great people. I am so glad that I married into a family where we all really like being with each other.

So, until this mini vacation, I am making a conscience effort to slow down and relax, you know take time to "smell the roses" and watch the clouds. Life doesn't need to be so hurried, even though we think that it does. We need to remember to see the world as we did when we were children -- relaxed and full of fun.

i'm jealous! it sounds like you guys are going to have a great time! Tell Bobbie and Doyle I said hi. Hope you have a really good time with them. i'm glad you guys get to slow down for a while and just relax. it is easy to just rush rush rush and forget to enjoy life.

i've noticed one thing that i will really miss: the fall! i'm definitely going to miss the leaves changing color and cool mornings and breaking out those comfy long-sleeve shirts. heck, i think i'm even going to miss raking! fall is my favorite season, so it's going to be weird to go from rainy to boiling-lava-hot in october and november. we don't even get Thanksgiving off!! school lets out a little early, and then the kids get Friday off, but the teachers have to do some sort of "professional development" workshops all day! so not fair!

So send me some pretty fall pictures while you guys are having fun gallivanting around. :) love you!

Thank you Bethany, we're looking forward to seeing you and Ben and Toddler Boy too! I know what you mean about there not being enough hours in the day...although now that the boys are married and living on their own, the pace is a lot less hectic. But I remember the days of Boy Scouts, Little League, youth group events. But Bethany, savor these hectic days. They end before you know it.

You know, I got to thinking about it and really, those days when we seem to be the car all day are really not that bad. The other day coming home from church, we were all singing "The Wheels On The Bus"; a favorite of all preschool aged children. Of course we had to sing ALL of the verses. Toddler Boy even made up his own verse..."The child on the bus says, Wake up Daddy". Ben and I laughed so hard. He definitely has a good imagination.

Yeah, things really do go by fast. I think that's one reason I enjoy riding the bike so much. I feel like I can actually slow down when I'm riding.

Answer~ you are not as young as you used to be, but that does not mean that the good old days are over. I'm sure some of the best are yet to come. I think you just have to take advantage of the opportunities that you get when you can. Taking tie to make the most of every minute is what makes them the good old days. That's why time seemed to go by so slowly when we were kids... we lived in the moment.
